Celebrating Black History Month
In recognition of Black History Month, the Town of Pembroke Park will be honoring a different influential African-American each day.
Today’s honoree is:
ROBERT FLEMING, JR.
(1857 – unknown)
Mr. Robert Flemming, Jr. was an African-American male born in 1857 in the State of Mississippi. He is best known for inventing the guitar. Though information on the life of Robert is virtually nonexistent, he is widely regarded as the “father of the guitar”. He filed a patent on March 3, 1886 with the U.S. Patent Office for the popular instrument. The patent (seen above) bears a strong resemblance to the acoustic guitar of today and the patent also includes instructions and how to use the instrument. (Cited: www.reference.com)
We salute Mr. Robert Flemming, Jr., for his remarkable accomplishments.
